Kicking Off Opportunity: Sportspay Foundation Supports Tatla Lake Youth

In the heart of British Columbia’s Chilcotin region sits Tatla Lake Elementary – Jr. Secondary School – a tiny but vibrant K–10 school where community spirit runs deep. With just 25 students, Tatla Lake is small in numbers, but it’s large in creativity and resilience. “Even though we’re small, our school has a big heart,” says Kimberley Ikebuchi, a teacher at the school. “We value connection, community, and learning together across grades. The school is truly the hub of our community – it’s where sports, cultural events, and celebrations happen.” For families from ranching, Indigenous, and settler backgrounds – many of whom travel long distances each day – the school is more than just a place to learn. It’s a cornerstone of life in this remote region.

Overcoming Challenges Through Team Spirit

Like many rural schools, Tatla Lake faces unique challenges. “Resources are always a struggle,” Ikebuchi explains. “Sports equipment, specialized programs, and opportunities that larger schools take for granted are things we have to actively fundraise or apply for.” Travel can also be difficult, with students often driving hours to attend tournaments or games.

That’s why a recent donation of new soccer balls from the Sportspay Foundation meant so much to the school. “Having proper soccer balls makes a huge difference,” Ikebuchi says. “It means every student can participate in drills and games without frustration over broken or misshaped balls.”

Soccer: A Tradition That Connects Communities

Soccer has long been a beloved tradition in Tatla Lake. Each fall, students take to the field, playing at recess and competing in local tournaments. One big event each year is the rural schools’ soccer gathering in Bella Coola, a celebration of sport and friendship that unites small communities across the region.

“Soccer is inclusive – every student can join in, no matter their skill level,” Ikebuchi notes. “It brings our community together and helps kids build confidence, teamwork, and lifelong memories.”

Heart and Determination on the Field

Ikebuchi recalls one story that captures the spirit of her students perfectly. “When our team went
to a tournament in Bella Coola last year, they didn’t have proper cleats, shin pads, or socks – some borrowed gear from the host school, and others played in worn-out shoes. But they gave it everything they had. The pride they felt representing Tatla Lake was unforgettable.”

For these young athletes, soccer is more than a game – it’s a chance to connect, grow, and shine. Thanks in part to the generosity of the Sportspay Foundation, those moments of fun, teamwork, and pride will continue to thrive in this small community.
