SportsPay Goes Downhill

HORSESHOE VALLEY, ONTARIO
SportsPay took a trip downhill this week, but in the best possible way

A group of six SportsPay team members headed to Horseshoe Resort to experience: downhill mountain biking. Equipped with bikes, protective gear, and a chairlift ride to the summit, the team traded office chairs for mountain trails and embraced a challenge well outside their comfort zones.

For many first-time riders, downhill mountain biking is often misunderstood. Television and online videos rarely capture the true scale of the terrain. The steepness of the trails, the technical features, and the realization that many sections are too steep to comfortably walk down often come as a surprise.

Fortunately, the group wasn’t thrown straight into the deep end. The day began with several hours of professional instruction, allowing participants to learn the fundamentals of bike handling, braking, body positioning, and trail etiquette before tackling the mountain on their own.

Following a well-earned lunch break, the riders returned to the trails, progressing through a series of green runs before taking on a handful of blue-rated descents. With every run, confidence grew, and skills improved.

Beyond the riding itself, the day highlighted the value of stepping outside familiar routines and embracing new experiences. Watching colleagues learn, adapt, and support one another throughout the day was one of the most rewarding aspects of the outing.

“It is always exciting to see people discover a new sport,”. “There’s something special about watching someone overcome their initial nerves and finish the day with a huge smile on their face.”

Horseshoe Resort as an ideal destination for newcomers to the sport. The combination of quality instruction, well-maintained beginner-friendly trails, and a welcoming riding community created an environment where learning felt both safe and enjoyable.

As the day wrapped up and the bikes were loaded away, there was a common feeling among the group: this would not be their last trip

For SportsPay, going downhill turned out to be a major step forward.

Some quotes from SportsPay staff…

Mev: “Exhilarating with the unexpected thrill of overcoming death”

Alish: “A few hours on the trails, 10 hours of sleep to recover, and every bit of it was worth it. The kind of day that leaves you completely exhausted but already excited for the next one.”

Caitlin “I can see the attraction of doing this now I want to try again”
